If you have kids then this post is a must read. As a preschool teacher, I know the power of an ice pack. Bonked your head? Ice pack. Microscopic cut nobody can see? Ice pack. Tripped over the toy you left on the floor? Ice pack. Seriously, ice packs can heal all things when you’re three. Check out this adorable DIY boo-boo buddy for kids. It is a simple sewing project that will dry up tears for years to come.

Would A Boo-Boo Buddy Help?

I have taken care of kids since I was old enough to be of any help. Over the years, I’ve healed many boo-boos. I’ve learned that there are a few magic medicines when dealing with boo-boos.

Number one on the list is a bandaid. It can heal anything from a paper cut to a broken heart. The power is magnified if the bandaid is decorated with characters or pretty colors.

Number two is an ice pack. I use this trick at school all the time. It is my favorite boo-boo healer. Bumps, bruises, rug burns, bug bites, pinched fingers, and pulled hair can all be fixed with a little ice pack. There are 11 nieces and nephews in my family. That’s a lot of injuries. This DIY boo-boo buddy for kids is the perfect gift. It can be customized to each child and even scented to help them calm down. It is an inexpensive option when you are doing a gift for a large group of kids.

Number three is a boo-boo kiss. You would be surprised at how quick the recovery is after receiving a boo-boo kiss. Although a boo-boo kiss has limits, they too can heal many hurts.

When presented with a boo-boo that nobody can actually see, I like to pull out my all better lotion. It’s regular lotion with a fancy name. I rub a little on the boo-boo and say, “All better!” It works especially well on growing pains. Although once a child can read the magic is over and a DIY boo-boo buddy works better.

Instructions

  1. First print out the FREE DIY Boo-Boo Buddy for Kids Pattern.
  2. Then cut out the pattern pieces.
  3. Next pin the pattern pieces to the fabric.
  4. Now it’s time to cut out the fabric.
  5. Pin the face pieces to one of the big squares and sew them on.
  6. Afterwards, sew the front and back pieces together wrong sides out. Leave a 1-2 inch opening in the side so that you can turn it right side out. Don’t forget to back stitch on either side of the opening.
  7.  First trim the excess fabric from the corners. Then turn it right side out and poke out the corners with a pencil.
  8. Now fill up the bag with rice or corn. I prefer rice for ice packs.
  9. Stitch the opening closed and you’re done! Stick it in the freezer for your next owie.

Tips for Making the DIY Boo-Boo Buddy for Kids

If you don’t know how to sew, check out the free sewing course by Farmhouse on Boone.

I like to fill ice packs with rice. I find that the rice cools better than corn. Although you can freeze or heat both options I prefer rice for cold and corn for hot.

If you wish to make a scented DIY boo-boo buddy for kids, try adding some lavender essential oil to the rice before putting it in the pouch. This is most easily accomplished by putting the rice and oil in a plastic bag and giving it a good shake.

Cotton, flannel, and felt all work well for making boo-boo buddies. The fabric isn’t going to be cuddled with so it doesn’t need to be snuggly like fleece unless you want it to be.

Using the DIY Boo-Boo Buddy for Kids

A DIY boo-boo buddy for kids is best kept in the freezer. This way it is ready to go at a moment’s notice. I prefer to put it in a plastic bag to help it stay clean. I’m always worried about spills or smells leeching onto the boo-boo buddy. When the boo-boo is healed just put the buddy back into the freezer for later.

If the boo-boo needs heat, pop the DIY boo-boo buddy in the microwave for about a minute. It can be reheated as many times as needed.
