Do You Wanna Be a Homesteader?

I was born in and raised in the city, but that’s never where my heart was. My mom’s parents both grew up in the country. Mama would tell me stories about sitting on the chicken while her brothers killed it. Papa showed me pictures of Pop’s hogs. When they got married they bought their own farm. My mom had a Shetland pony that would escape and go into town by itself. They had a bull that would get after Mama when she went outside. Despite their city addresses now, I don’t think either of them have a city dwellers heart. I spent many days running barefoot, picking cherries, and playing in the dirt while they planted tomatoes. Mama passed on her gardening skills to my mom.

When I was a teenager, we finally moved out of the city limits to a little three acre property. It was by no means the country, but it made me happy. My mom and step dad brought home chickens and planted a large garden. Now they have bees and are learning how to collect their own honey.

I’ve always wanted to live on a real farm. I was a horse crazy little girl, but loved all of the animals. Although that hasn’t happened yet, I started doing what I could. I was inspired by some of the best homestead bloggers. It began with a small garden. Then I had to learn to can the tomatoes and dry the herbs. After that I was determined to do it all. My Pinterest feed and Instagram reel were filled with the best homestead bloggers. I learned how to bake with sourdough, make my own body products, and clean with natural products. Although I still don’t live on a homestead, I have the homestead mindset.
