How does the grout get so dirty even with weekly mopping? It’s so frustrating that it has to have special treatment. But I’m here to help you make a homemade grout cleaner that is free from harsh chemicals and doesn’t require an exhaust fan to use. And then when your kid is licking the floor later, you won’t have to worry about the chemicals they are being exposed to.

Guess I Have to Finish It
I had a beautiful home birth and wonderful midwives. But birth is messy and there are lots of bodily fluids. My sweet midwife used some peroxide on the bathroom floor to clean up my bodily fluids, if you know you know. But now, the spot that she cleaned makes the rest of my grout look very dirty. So I need to finish the rest of the bathroom floor. I’ll be playing Cinderella with my homemade grout cleaner if anybody needs me.

Homemade Grout Cleaner Ingredients
Baking Soda
Baking soda is a cleaning powerhouse. It helps remove soap scum, grime, and stains. It’s slightly abrasive, which gives you a good scrubbing boost. It can also help remove and prevent mold.
Hydrogen Peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide helps remove stains and whiten the grout. It works especially well on bodily fluids as my midwife demonstrated.
Castile Soap
Castile soap is a non-toxic, plant based soap. Any soap will work in the homemade grout cleaner, but I prefer the clean ingredients in castile soap. It will help make the paste and clean the grout.
Essential Oils
While not necessary to make the homemade grout cleaner, essential oils can give it a little extra boost. Lemon essential oil helps remove stains and grime. Tea tree essential oil can help with mold. A thieves blend will help with the general cleaning power of the paste.

Homemade Grout Cleaner Recipe
Ingredients
½ cup baking soda
2 tablespoons hydrogen peroxide
2 teaspoons castile soap
5 drops essential oils optional
Instructions
- In a small bowl mix together ½ cup baking soda, 2 tablespoons hydrogen peroxide, and 2 teaspoons castile soap. You may add 5 drops of essential oils if you want to. I like to add lemon because it helps remove grime and stains. Tea tree would be good if you are cleaning moldy shower grout.
- Then mix until you get a thick paste.
- Next apply the homemade grout cleaner liberally to the grout using a small brush or old toothbrush. Scrub lightly to work it into the grout.
- Allow it to sit for 5 minutes before wiping it away with a wet cloth.

Using Homemade Grout Cleaner
Before doing a large area, make sure to test a small inconspicuous area.
Apply a liberal amount of homemade grout cleaner to a small section. It can be applied with an old tooth brush, a grout brush, or an electric scrubber. Lightly scrub it into the grout. Then allow it to sit for 5 minutes, before wiping it away with a damp rag or sponge.
This is a very tedious task, but it will take your grout from grimey to clean. If you have tough stains, treat just the stain and allow it to sit longer. For white grout, you can use straight peroxide after you’ve cleaned it to bleach it white again.
