Sunny and 75!
As a teacher, I think I look forward to summer more than anybody else. It means that I will finally have some time to work on projects that are totally unrelated to school, such as the chicken tractor I’m trying to get built. Summer has always been one of my favorites though, long before teaching. Certain smells bring about fond memories of summers gone by.
I spent many summer days at my grandparents’ house. If you wanted to go outside, the rule was shoes on or socks off. I can’t remember a single time that I opted to put my shoes on. I ran barefoot through the grass damp with morning dew and across the hot driveway to go feed the fish. Many days we would make a fire to keep the bugs away. Mama gave us water guns to spray the flames, so that it would only smoke and not get too hot.
My family went to the beach quite often. There was a big tunnel that I never wanted to miss because I was asleep. It meant that we were close to the beach. Plus it was always so exciting to think that we were driving underground. But as soon as we crossed over the bridge, we rolled down the windows to smell the ocean air. We always went at the end of summer just before going back to school. So coming home the bridge and tunnel were not nearly as exciting because it meant that summer was officially over.

Summer Diffuser Blends: Lemonade
I was and still am obsessed with the Little House books. One summer after reading about the lemonade served at Nellie Olsen’s party in On the Banks of Plum Creek, my mom decided to let us make real lemonade. I was beyond excited to squeeze those lemons dry. This blend takes me right back to that time around the table making lemonade.
4 drops lemon
2 drops spearmint
1 drop basil
Summer Diffuser Blends: Campfire
My family started camping around middle school, but I was already very familiar with hot dogs over a fire. My favorite was when it got dark and Uncle Don and Uncle T would tell stories. Often their stories were very long jokes with a silly punch line, but they told them with such enthusiasm and made all sorts of silly voices. I often repeat a condensed version of Nate the Famous Talking Snake the Only Snake in the World that can Talk.
3 drops cedarwood
1 drops cypress
Summer Diffuser Blends: Orange Creamsicle
Mama and Papa always kept ice cream and popsicles in their freezer. Mid afternoon Mama would take us outside to the porch swing to enjoy a frozen treat. We pretended to be flying an airplane while eating orange creamsicles and swinging just as high as that swing would allow.
4 drops sweet orange
2 drops vanilla
Summer Diffuser Blends: Beach Vacation
Put a little beach vacation in your diffuser. Then close your eyes and imagine the sound of crashing waves. Feel the sun on your skin and the sand between your toes. Happy thoughts can ease your mind on a stressful day. This blend takes me to a chair on the beach with a good book and nothing on my to-do list.
3 drops bergamot
1 drop rosemary
3 drops lavender
Summer Diffuser Blends: Summer Citrus
Citrus fruits are in season this time of year, so it’s no wonder this blend smells like summer to me. It smells fresh and clean. This summer differ blend reminds me of waking up from a nap as a kid only to find that my mom had cleaned the entire house. It has the same refreshingly clean smell. Now if only I could wake up from a nap to a clean house as an adult.
2 drops of each
Lemon
Spearmint
Grapefruit
Lime
Summer Diffuser Blends: No Bugs
I am a bug magnet. Nobody else will get bit, but I will. Put a little No Bugs blend in the diffuser outdoors during a BBQ or quiet time in the shade. It works especially well on mosquitos. In the case that you’re as sweet as pie like me, try this itch relief stick. It provides instant relief.
2 drops peppermint
4 drops citronella
2 drops lemongrass
Summer Diffuser Blends: Fireworks
I don’t know about you, but I LOVE fireworks. In high school I would save all of my work and notes from the year. Then on the Fourth of July I would take it all out back and blow it up with fireworks. That was only to be trumped by blowing a metal bowl full of water into the air with water dynamite. We all have a little pyro in us right?
2 drops bergamot
4 drops juniper berry
2 drops grapefruit
1 drop ylang ylang
