House to Home
When we purchased our first home the budget for home decor was very tight. I loved the rustic, country, farmhouse look, but didn’t have the ability to go out and purchase the Magnolia Home line at Target. Therefore, I scoured Pinterest for some DIY ideas and frequented the thrift stores. I was able to decorate our little yellow house and turn it into a home. Although my style has evolved, I still try a DIY project or check the thrift stores for my home decor on a budget.

Home Decor on a Budget: Thrifting
Look often.
If you are wanting to find the perfect piece, then you are going to need to look often. New things are constantly being donated to thrift stores and posted on Facebook marketplace. That means you will have to be on the hunt to find what you’re looking for.
Have your measurements ready.
Nothing is worse than being in a thrift store and seeing the perfect piece, but not knowing if it will fit your space. If you know you want a clock for the mantle, then make sure you measure the mantle. I keep these measurements in the notes app on my phone, so that they are always handy.
See the possibility.
Sometimes when looking at thrifted home decor, you have to be willing to look past its current state and see the possibility. Maybe you love the picture and not the frame. That’s an easy enough thing to switch. Be willing to see the potential in an item, but remain realistic. Are you willing to take the time and effort to turn a possibility into the perfect piece?
Make a list.
Make a list of what home decor items you would like for your home. This will help you stay focused when you’re out shopping.
You can also resell.
If you purchase something and you don’t end up loving it once you get it home you can always turn around and sell it on Facebook marketplace.
Home Decor on a Budget: DIY
Repurpose things you already have.
Look around your home for things that can be repurposed. Maybe those mason jars could be painted to become a bathroom set. Turn an old window into a picture frame. The calendar pictures can be put in frames. Shop your house for supplies.
Paint is cheap.
Painting is one of the easiest ways to change an item. It’s cheap to buy, easy to do, and mistakes aren’t hard to correct. Furniture, frames, jars, signs, heck even couches and be painted and given new life.
Be willing to learn.
If you want a unique home then you may have to learn some DIY skills along the way. Perhaps you found a gorgeous tablecloth but it’s the wrong size. Learning to sew isn’t that difficult and then you can have the perfect tablecloth. My personal favorite is learning to use power tools. I’m pretty fond of the staple gun and palm sander.
Figure out the price.
Although DIY is a great way to make some home decor on a budget, it isn’t always cost effective. Figure out the price of supplies and compare it to what you’d buy at the store. You might be surprised.
The goal isn’t perfection.
You are not a machine and you will not turn out perfect pieces. But remember that nobody is as critical of you as you are of yourself. My mom made us quilts and she sees all the flaws. I see a beautiful quilt and family heirloom.
