It’s on the Calendar
When my husband and I got engaged, we decided to make a family calendar on Google. After creating a family calendar, we realized that it wasn’t working for us. He put things on there the day they were going to happen. I never checked it to know what he had going on or added anything I had going on. So it was a big flop.
Once we got married, we switched to a paper calendar that resides on the side of the fridge. Although not perfect, it has worked much better for us than using Google. We can both glance over it while making breakfast and have a good idea of what the month holds.

Why You Need to Be Creating a Family Calendar
Now you may be thinking, what good is creating a family calendar? I’m going to give you 3 good reasons why your family needs a calendar.
It Makes Meal Planning Easier.
Before I can make a meal plan for the month, I must sit down and fill out the calendar. If I know that I will not be home until after 7 then I know that I won’t be cooking a meal that night. I need something from the freezer or CrockPot. Since
You will discover the same thing. Once you know what is happening in life, you can create a more appropriate meal plan that you’ll actually stick to. This will save you money on eating out as well.
You’ll Know What to Expect in the Budget.
Speaking of money, creating a family calendar will help you know what you need to budget for that month. Whether it’s birthday gifts, extra food for company, or a trip, you’ll know it’s coming because you can see it on the calendar everyday.
I know in my family there are lots of nieces and nephews which means lots of birthday gifts. Writing everybody’s birthday on the calendar has helped me plan ahead and purchase gifts in enough time to get them sent or delivered by their birthday. It’s helpful to be reminded of extra costs ahead of time.
It Reduces Your Mental Load.
If I had to pick one reason why you need a family calendar then this would be it. Writing things down on the calendar means that they no longer have to be on your mind. You don’t have to remember every birthday. That vet appointment is written down, so you don’t have to worry about whether they said 1:15 or 1:30. Having a family calendar relieves you of the mental load that comes from being a responsible adult…well some of it at least.

Start Today By Creating a Family Calendar
Birthdays
Go through and write birthdays and anniversaries. In my calendar the birthdays are always written in blue. I will use last year’s calendar to fill out this information. It helps me keep up with all the new nieces and nephews born each year.
Appointments
Now go through and write in any appointments that you’ve got scheduled. This includes doctor’s appointments, car service, vet trips, teeth cleanings, etc. If you want to get fancy, give each person a color. This can be a highlighter or pen. Then use it so note who the appointment is for. Since it is just the two of us and all of the appointments are for me, we don’t bother color coding them yet.
Extracurriculars
If you already know when sports games, dance practices, music lessons, and scout meetings will be, then write them down. You can use the same color coding for these as well. Since we don’t have children yet, our calendar is fairly empty in this department, except for my karate classes.
Other Commitments
Lastly, go through and fill out anything else you may need to attend. This could be anything from a Bible study, parent teacher conferences, to a girls weekend. I also add seed starting dates, so that I don’t forget them. Put it all on the calendar.

Now What? After Creating a Family Calendar
You’ve finished creating a family calendar, so now it’s time to put it into action. Hang it up, somewhere that the whole family will see it. We put ours on the side of the fridge. So while we prepare meals or grab a drink we come face to face with the calendar. Having this constant reminder keeps us from forgetting any important dates.
Now that you know what you’ve committed to, you can sit down to plan the meals and buy the birthday gifts for the month. Talk to your husband about who will pick up and drop off the kids to all of these events.
