Just Like Home
Nothing motivates me to cook and clean like knowing that company is coming over. I can get the house sparkling clean in no time when I know that somebody else is about to see it. Even if that somebody is my own mom. Since we have always lived away from one side of the family or the other, we always host. I’m no expert, but I do make sure my guests feel right at home. And you can too! Let’s get your home ready for company.

Get Your Home Ready for Company: Cleaning
Now is not the time to deep clean.
When you’re expecting company, focus on the cleaning they will notice. Nobody is going to swipe their finger across the baseboards or look inside your kitchen cabinets. This isn’t the time to deep clean.
Do high priority areas first.
The most important parts of the house are the kitchen and the bathrooms. Nobody feels comfortable using a toilet with dribbles on the seat or washing up with hair in the sink. Make sure the bathroom looks and smells good. Wipe down the kitchen counters, clean out the microwave, and run the dishwasher. Put our fresh towels in both of these rooms. Sweep the floor, but skip the mop. Your guests will track dirt in anyways.
Empty the trash cans.
Even if they aren’t full, empty the trash cans before guests arrive. Nobody wants to see your dirty tissues in the bathroom trash or smell the old food in the kitchen trash.
Clear off the flat surfaces.
Get the mail off the counter, craft projects off the table, and toys off the floor. Just tidying up will make a huge difference in how the house feels.
Fresh bedding is a must.
If your guests are spending the night, make sure to put fresh linens on the bed. Nobody wants to sleep in somebody else’s dirty sheets.
Get Your Home Ready for Company: Food
Easy trumps elaborate.
Simple meals are the best. You would rather spend time with your guests than in the kitchen. Pull out the Crock Pot. My go-to meals are chili, chicken tortellini soup, and ham and beans. For breakfast, a make ahead casserole is my favorite. Keep lunches simple with sandwiches or meat trays.
Stick to familiar favorites.
It is best not to try a new recipe when your company is around. Stick to meals that you know how to prepare well. This will prevent any awkward meals or utter disasters.
Prep ahead of time.
Do as much prep work ahead of time as possible. Cook the meat, slice the vegetables, and assemble the casseroles. This will cut down on the time you spend in the kitchen while your visitors are there.
Have snacks & drinks available.
Put snacks out on the counter and let guests know that they are there for them. Keep the fridge stocked with drinks. If your company enjoys coffee or tea, make a station near the coffee pot, so that they can help themselves if they wake up before you.
Check for dietary restrictions.
Always ask about allergies or dietary restrictions before making a meal plan. This could save everybody from a really awkward meal.
Get Your Home Ready for Company: Above & Beyond
Have a snack basket in the bedroom.
Put out a few snacks, bottles of water, and perhaps a bit of candy in the guest room. This will ensure nobody goes to bed hungry or feels uncomfortable eating more food after a meal.
Post your wifi password.
Make sure your wifi password is displayed in at least the guest room. We have ours framed and keep it on the nightstand. This holds especially true if you have spotty cell service at your house like we do.
Make room for their stuff.
Do your best to leave room for their things. I’m not saying you must clean out the closet, but do clear off the nightstand so that they can plug in their phone and take off their earrings.
Leave an extra blanket and fan.
In order to make sure everybody has a good night’s sleep, leave extra blankets and pillows in the room. If there is not a ceiling fan, you may consider a pedestal fan. Do these things in the summer and winter because you never know if somebody sleeps hot or cold.
Stock the bathroom.
Bare minimum the bathroom needs toilet paper, air freshener, and extra towels. Put extra bags in the trash can as well. If you want to go over the top when you get your home ready for company, then you can also stock feminine hygiene items, sample sized toiletries, cotton pad, and flossers. These are the most often forgotten items on a trip. Think of it like a hotel bathroom if you need ideas.
