Christmas in the Big Woods
Growing up, I listened to my mom read the Little House series to me before bed every night. Now I read them or listen to audiobook versions at least once a year. My favorite is and has always been Little House in the Big Woods. When I hear the first line, it’s like coming home after a long trip. I feel like much of my life was influenced by the books, including my desire to homestead.
This year I decided to try my hand at making a clove apple like Ma ingalls. It was a great success! After about half an hour I filled a small apple up with whole cloves. It smells amazing and is staying good for an unusually long amount of time. The teacher in me realized that not only would it be a great gift for kids to make, but it requires some serious fine motor practice. That would be great for preschoolers or even young kids learning to write. So the homesteader, teacher, and Little House nerd in me all recommend you make a clove apple like Ma Ingalls this Christmas season.

How to Make a Clove Apple Like Ma Ingalls
Supplies
Apple
Instructions
- Push whole cloves into the apple. Start at the top of the apple and work your way down. They should be close together, but don’t need to touch. The more you put in the longer the apple will stay fresh.
- When you get to the bottom of the apple, rinse it off with cold water. The juice gets everything sticky and the cloves make a mess.
- Dry it off and leave it out for the season.
Tips for Making a Clove Apple Like Ma Ingalls
If you or a small child is struggling to push the cloves into the apple, try poking holes first. A bamboo skewer, toothpick, or kebab stick will work well. I found it much faster to do without “pre-drilled” holes, but it did make my thumbs sore.
Do this project over the table. The ends of the cloves sometimes break as you shove them in the apple making a mess. Plus the apple juice goes everywhere. I also rinsed the apple several times during this project.
Leave the stem attached and you can tie a string on it, so that it can hang on the Christmas tree. This will only work on smaller apples.
