A Woman’s Work is Never Over
When I lived with my mom, I never understood why she never sat still. She couldn’t watch a movie without folding the laundry or sorting the mail. She was like the energizer bunny. It made me tired just watching her. She always gushed over me when I would unload and reload the dishwasher while she was at work. I simply thought that she just really hated doing the dishes.
Now that I have a home of my own, I realize the truth is that a woman’s work is never finished. You can do all of the dishes, but somebody is still using a cup that you’ll have to wash later. The whole time you’re cleaning the bathroom, somebody is waiting to use it. Following a simple cleaning routine helps the busy woman keep a clean house all the time. Or at least cleanish.

Simple Daily Cleaning Routine For The Busy Woman
Morning
In the morning do a couple chores before heading out the door.
When everybody is done getting ready, I wipe down the bathroom sink. I know my long hair gets all over it.
Always make the bed in the morning. It takes your house from a disaster to livable. Plus it feels good to climb into a made bed at night.
If there’s time, unload the dishwasher or switch the laundry. I don’t always have time for these in the morning, but if there’s five minutes to spare I knock out a chore.
Evening
When you get home, there’s mouths to feed and showers to take. As a teacher, I normally come home with work to do as well.
After dinner, clean the kitchen. It doesn’t have to be thorough or perfect. Just enough that it’s clean. Load the dishwasher, wipe down the counters, sweep the floor, scrub the sink, and if needed do a quick mop. I hate waking up to a sink of dishes. Anything that doesn’t fit in the dishwasher, I wash by hand and put out to dry.
Before starting my nightly routine, I tidy up the house. I fold the throw blankets, put away everything on the counter, straighten the pillows, and collect the remotes. If I couldn’t fold the laundry in the morning, I do it at this time. While it’s still light outside, I go water the the plants too.
After showers, I spray down the shower with my homemade, daily, shower spray.
After we’ve brushed our teeth, I wipe down the mirror and bathroom counter again.
Then, I’m done for the day. If something doesn’t happen, I figure I’ll get it tomorrow. There’s no need to stress about it. Some nights none of this happens because I don’t get home until 9:00. On those nights, I throw food in my body, shower, brush my teeth, and go to bed.
Simple Weekly Cleaning Routine For The Busy Woman
When I talk about my weekly routine, I mean the things that only happen once a week. Sometimes time is on my side and they happen during the week. That’s very unusual, so most of the time it’s done on Saturday morning before these chores get accomplished.
I start Saturday mornings by stripping the bed. I spray my DIY linen spray on the bed and pillows before putting on clean sheets.
The sheets go into the wash, while I sort the rest of the laundry. The laundry continues until it’s finished. Sometimes that one day, sometimes that’s three days. It depends on what else is going on. I fold each load as it dries.
Up next on the list of weekly chores is cleaning the kitchen. I like to spray down the counters to disinfect them and clean the stove top if needed. Which let’s be honest, it usually does because I’m a messy cook. I’ll also wipe down the appliances. This is a quick clean, not a deep clean job.
Then it’s time to clean the bathrooms. I wipe down the mirror, sink, and toilet. The toilet bowl gets cleaned as well. When I’m done, I’ll empty the trash and throw the towels in the laundry.
The final weekly chore is to clean the floors. I’ll sweep, mop, and vacuum. This is my good clean for the floors. The rest of the week Ricky Rumba runs and I spot clean as needed.
I can usually have all of this finished in a couple hours. It’s the first thing I do when I get up on Saturday.
Simple Monthly Cleaning Routine For The Busy Woman
The monthly chores happen at the beginning of every month. The first weekend of the month is when I try to complete these chores unless we have something going on that weekend.
Just like the simple weekly cleaning routine, the monthly routine starts with the bed. I strip everything off and wash the blanket and quilt. The quilt is washed on an as needed basis, but the blanket gets washed every month.
Next up is the kitchen. I do my regular weekly cleaning plus some extras. First I wipe down the cabinet doors and the inside of the fridge. Next everything comes off of the counter so that I can give it good cleaning. I scrape and scour the stovetop too. I will toss the spoon rest and sponge basket into the dishwasher for a good cleaning. I’ll take any old sponges out and replace them with new ones. The final step is cleaning the Berkey water filter. You can check out my post about how I do that here.
Then it’s bathroom time. I do my regular clean, but I add in a few steps similar to the kitchen. I’ll wipe down cabinet doors, switches, and doorknobs. The biggest difference is that I scrub the tub during the monthly clean. My daily shower spray keeps it clean enough that it doesn’t need it every week.
When the laundry is finished, I will run it through a cleaning cycle with vinegar. The tops of the machines get dust, so I’ll wipe those down too.
The couch somehow collects crumbs and lint during the month. I’ll vacuum out the cushions and rub it down with some homemade leather cleaner. I’ll spritz the pillow with my linen spray, then toss the throws in the laundry because they are covered in cat fur.
Last is my least favorite chore. Dusting. Light fixtures, fans, furniture, and baseboards are all dusted. Wooden furniture gets a good coat of Old English.
This cleaning takes me a bit longer than my weekly cleaning because I’m adding in so many things. Because of the time it takes, I’ll split it between two days or sometimes two weekends. If done in one day, it takes a better part of the day to complete. I’m a little ADHD though, so maybe you focus a bit more than me and can get it done quicker.
